"How much is boat painting?" has no single answer — but if you understand what drives the price, you can judge a quote properly and avoid cheap-looking jobs that blister later.
The main cost factors
- Boat length and surface area: paint and labour scale directly with area.
- Extent of surface prep: most of the cost is in prep, not paint — sanding, filling, priming. If the old paint must be stripped, the job grows.
- Paint system: a single-coat refresh and a multi-coat two-part (2K) polyurethane system are very different prices. 2K systems cost more but last longer and shine.
- Antifouling or topside? A below-waterline antifouling refresh is much shorter and cheaper than a full topside repaint.
- Colour and graphics: a colour change, boot stripe and graphics mean extra masking and labour.
Why a cheap quote costs more
A job that skimps on prep soon blisters, flakes and has to be redone. The secret to a lasting paint job is in the invisible steps: correct sanding, the right primer, respecting drying times. So compare quotes by scope, not just the number.
What transparent pricing looks like
A good quote is itemised: prep, primer, paint system, coat count and labour shown separately. We give a written quote in this format after the survey — no surprise invoices.
