Epoxy is a strong material, but even small application mistakes cause adhesion problems, bubbles, dullness or incomplete curing. Here are the most common — and entirely preventable — mistakes.
1. Wrong mix ratio
If the resin/hardener ratio is off, epoxy won't cure right — it stays tacky or turns brittle. Follow the maker's ratio exactly.
2. Poor surface prep
Epoxy won't hold on a dirty, greasy or glossy surface. Sanding and cleaning are essential.
3. Wrong temperature/humidity
Curing stalls when too cold and speeds up problematically when too hot. In damp air an "amine blush" (greasy film) can form.
4. One thick coat
A thick application generates heat, causing bubbles and cracks. Thin coats are safer.
5. Not washing off amine blush
Applying over the greasy film between coats without washing ruins adhesion.
6. Insufficient cure time
Sanding or painting before full cure spoils the result. Patience is needed.
