Gelcoat Renewal: How to Polish and Repair Faded Gelcoat

Why does gelcoat fade, crack and go dull? The difference between polishing and renewal, and when each is needed.

Gelcoat is the coloured, glossy protective layer on the outside of a fibreglass boat. Over time sun, salt and oxidation fade it, dull it and crack it. The good news: in most cases gelcoat can be restored without repainting the whole boat.

Why does gelcoat degrade?

  • Oxidation: UV chalks the surface; gloss goes and the colour greys.
  • Scratches and micro-cracks: impact and stress cause fine "spider" cracks.
  • Stains and yellowing: waterline stains and chemical contact spoil the colour.

Polish or renew?

If the gelcoat is still thick enough, a cut & polish is usually enough: an abrasive compound and machine remove the thin oxidised layer, exposing the sound gloss beneath. If the gelcoat has thinned too far, has deep cracks or is flaking, a gelcoat renewal is needed: local filling, sanding and fresh gelcoat/topcoat.

Colour matching

Aged white gelcoat drifts to a cream tone, so an exact match on a spot repair can be hard. On visible surfaces we recommend a full panel rather than a spot when needed, so transitions don't show.

When is paint required?

If the gelcoat is too far gone to repair, or you want to change colour, boat painting makes more sense. We assess thickness and condition at a free survey before deciding.

If your gelcoat has faded, scratched or dulled, let's take a look on site under our fibreglass repair service and tell you clearly whether polishing or renewal is needed.
