Choosing Marine Upholstery Fabric: Durable and Elegant

Which fabric should you use aboard? Choosing marine-grade fabric and foam resistant to UV, salt, damp and mould.

Upholstery aboard faces far tougher conditions than at home: sun, salt, damp and constant use. So the choice of fabric and foam directly determines how long the upholstery lasts.

Marine-grade fabrics

Suitable fabrics resist UV fading, repel water and resist stains and mould. For exterior (cockpit) upholstery, solution-dyed acrylics; for interiors, marine-grade vinyl and fabrics are preferred.

The right foam

Standard foam holds water and grows mould aboard. Quick-dry (draining) foam, especially for exterior cushions, lets moisture through and prevents mould. Indoors, the balance of comfort and density matters.

Stitching and details

Stitching should use UV-resistant thread; otherwise the seams fail while the fabric is still sound. Stainless zips and snaps also matter for longevity.
