What Is Osmosis and How Is It Treated on Fibreglass Boats?

Osmosis is one of the words fibreglass boat owners dread most — but understood correctly, it's a manageable problem. This article explains, in plain terms, what osmosis is, how to spot it and how a professional treatment works.

What is osmosis?

Fibreglass boats have a laminate of glass fibre and resin beneath the outer gelcoat layer. Over time water seeps through the gelcoat's micro-pores and reacts with soluble components in the laminate. This reaction produces an acidic liquid and gas; as pressure builds, blisters form under the gelcoat. That process is osmosis.

What are the symptoms?

  • Blisters on the underwater surface, most visible when the boat is ashore
  • A sour, vinegar-like fluid when a blister is pierced
  • Patchy dullness and moisture marks in the gelcoat

A few small blisters aren't always an emergency; but once widespread, they threaten the laminate's structural integrity. That's why early detection matters.

How is osmosis treated?

Correct osmosis treatment takes patience and follows these stages:

  • Gelcoat peeling: the affected gelcoat layer is removed with a special peeler.
  • Washing and drying: the laminate is pressure-washed and left to dry until the moisture level drops below an acceptable threshold — sometimes for weeks. Skip this and the treatment fails.
  • Repair and fill: opened blisters are repaired with epoxy filler.
  • Epoxy barrier coat: a multi-coat epoxy barrier keeps water from getting back in.
  • Antifouling: finally, underwater paint is applied.

The critical point is drying. A yard that applies a barrier coat without measuring moisture simply traps the problem inside. We never move to the next step until the moisture level is right.

What determines cost and time?

The cost of osmosis treatment depends on boat length, how widespread the damage is and the drying time required. Because drying depends on climate and laminate condition, the timing can't be fixed in advance; we produce a realistic schedule from a moisture reading at the survey.

How do you prevent osmosis?

On new boats a quality epoxy barrier coat is a protective investment. On existing boats, regular hull checks and antifouling maintenance give early warning.
