Wooden Boat Painting: Varnish or Paint, and When?

Surface finishing on a wooden boat is both aesthetic and protective. Paint and varnish serve different aims; the right choice depends on the wood's condition and the look you want.

Paint or varnish?

Varnish: shows the wood's natural grain, gives a classic, warm look, but needs more care. Paint: a more protective, durable surface that shields the wood from UV better; the grain doesn't show. On heavily worn hull areas, paint is often preferred.

Surface prep is decisive

The secret to a lasting finish is in the prep, not the paint: correctly stripping old layers, dry and sound wood, the right primer. Paint over damp or rotten wood soon blisters.

Coat count and care

Many thin coats give the most durable result. In both methods, regular maintenance coats extend the life.
