Case Study: Restoring a 1970 Classic Wooden Sailboat

Sometimes a boat isn't just a vessel but a story. In this case study we share how a 1970 classic wooden sailboat was brought back to life while preserving its original character.

The start: condition assessment

The boat came to us with leaking seams, patches of rotten planking and faded varnish. The first step was to map the damage: which areas were structural and which cosmetic? An unhurried survey is the basis of the right plan.

Structural repair

Rotten areas were cut back to sound wood; where possible we grafted in the original timber species, and reinforced with epoxy where needed. The aim wasn't to make the boat look "new" but to strengthen it while keeping its character.

Caulking and watertightness

The opened seams were remade with caulking, choosing a system flexible enough to accommodate the wood's movement.

Varnish and finish

The surface was taken back to bare wood and multi-coat varnish applied. The result: a boat that keeps its fifty-year-old soul but is seaworthy again.
