The secret to superyachts' deep, glass-like gloss is often two-part (2K) polyurethane paint. So what is it and why does it give such a good result?
What does 2K mean?
2K means the paint consists of a base and a hardener. Mixed, it cures chemically and forms a very hard, durable film. Single-part (1K) paints dry with air and stay softer.
Advantages
High, lasting gloss, excellent UV and chemical resistance, long life. Applied correctly, it stays like new for years.
Application conditions
2K systems take skill: the right mix ratio, temperature/humidity conditions, a dust-free environment and proper equipment. So a quality 2K job is a whole with surface prep and workmanship — which is why its cost is higher than 1K.
