Choosing a Boat Cover: The Right Protection in Winter

Tight plastic or a ventilated cover? How to choose the right cover that protects the boat from mould and damp in winter.

Most of the problems a boat suffers over winter come from the wrong cover. A good cover protects the boat; a bad one traps damp and breeds mould.

The tight-plastic trap

Cheap, tight plastic covers don't breathe; condensing moisture inside causes mould and bad smell. "Waterproof" doesn't always mean "right".

The right cover: ventilated

The ideal cover blocks rain and UV while allowing airflow. Breathable fabrics or systems with proper ventilation gaps are preferred.

Tension and slope

The cover should be sloped and taut so water and snow don't pool on it. Pooled water's weight strains both cover and boat. A good frame/support system prevents this.

Our winterising package provides the right ventilated cover and its fitting under our winterising service. See our checklist for the process.
