Boat Haul-Out Guide: When, Why and How?

Some jobs can't be done afloat; hull work, antifouling and extensive fibreglass repairs need the boat out of the water. Here's a practical guide to the haul-out process.

Which jobs need a haul-out?

• Antifouling renewal and underwater paint
• Osmosis treatment and below-waterline structural repairs
• Hull cleaning, shaft/rudder checks and general assessment

How does it work?

The boat is lifted out by travel-lift (or slipway) and secured on props. A pressure wash follows immediately — marine growth is far harder to remove once dry. Then the planned work begins.

When to haul out?

End of season (together with winterising) is the most common time; the lift cost combines with maintenance and there's time over winter for big jobs. Book early, as hardstanding fills fast at season's end.
