Fibreglass boats

Pros: lower routine maintenance, water-resistant, a wide used market. Watch for: over time osmosis, gelcoat fading and cracks can appear; but these are manageable jobs.

Wooden boats

Pros: unique character, repairability, classic value. Watch for: regular varnish and caulking care; neglected, the risk of rot and leaks grows. Cared for properly, they last generations.

Cost and time

A fibreglass boat generally needs fewer annual maintenance hours; a wooden boat expects regular attention but material repair is usually possible. So wood isn't "more expensive," it's "more attention-hungry."
