Summer Sun Protection: Gelcoat, Teak and Varnish

Summer is when a boat is used most but its materials tire most. UV rays and salt dull the gelcoat, grey the teak and crack the varnish. With the right prevention, this wear slows considerably.

Gelcoat and UV

Glossy gelcoat oxidises and dulls in the sun. A seasonal polish and UV protective coating preserve colour and gloss and defer the eventual need for gelcoat renewal.

Teak and varnish

Teak naturally greys in the sun; regular teak care manages this. On wood surfaces the varnish layer is the first defence against the sun; thin interim coats prevent cracking.

Cover and shade

Protecting the boat from the sun on unused days is the cheapest maintenance. The right canvas/cover protects both interior and deck.
