Surface Prep Before Painting: The Invisible Secret to a Lasting Finish

The most common mistake boat owners make is judging by the paint brand while underrating the prep. Yet most of a lasting finish is decided in the invisible steps before the paint.

Prep, step by step

• Cleaning and degreasing: dirt, salt and silicone/oil residue are removed. Paint won't hold on a greasy surface.
• Sanding: the surface is keyed so the new coat grips.
• Fairing: dents, scratches and unevenness are filled and smoothed — a smooth base means a smooth finish.
• Primer: the critical coat that provides adhesion and coverage. Especially important in a colour change.

Why does it matter so much?

A job that skimps on prep soon blisters, flakes and must be redone — so the cheap-looking job costs more. Correct prep is the precondition for even the most durable paint.
