Teak Deck Cleaning: A DIY Guide (The Right Way)

Teak cleaning is simple done right; done wrong it thins the teak over the years. Here's the practical way to clean teak without harm.

The right method

• Soft brush, along the grain: a stiff brush or brushing across the grain erodes the soft summer grain and makes teak uneven.
• Mild detergent + plenty of water: a gentle boat soap is usually enough. Don't let dirt build up in the seams.
• Light pressure: the aim is to lift surface dirt, not to sand the teak.

What to avoid

• Frequent use of harsh, acidic "teak cleaners" — fast results but they erode teak.
• High-pressure washing — it tears the soft grain and lifts seams.

Greying is normal
