Where to Store a Boat in Winter? Ashore, Afloat and Indoors

When winter comes, boat owners' first question is: "Where do I store the boat?" There are three main options; the right one depends on your boat, budget and region.

Ashore (hardstand)

The most common option. The boat is hauled out, propped and covered. Pros: the hull dries, underwater work is easy, osmosis risk drops. Watch for: correct propping and a ventilated cover are essential.

Afloat (marina)

The boat stays in the water. Pros: no lift cost, quick access. Watch for: the hull is in constant contact with water, raising growth and osmosis risk, plus storm and ice risk.

Indoor storage

The most protected but most expensive option. Pros: full protection from the weather, ideal for gelcoat and wood. Watch for: cost and limited space; book early.

Which is right?
