Wooden Boat Rot Repair: How It's Done and Prevented

Rot is the wooden boat's most insidious enemy. It starts where moisture is trapped and unventilated, and spreads to structural members if missed. The good news: caught early, it can be stopped and repaired.

Why does rot form?

Constant moisture + no airflow = fungal activity. It usually starts at deck-hull joints, the bilge, mast step and corners where water pools. Darkening, softness and easily crumbling fibres are signs of rot.

Repair steps

The rotten area is cleaned out back to sound wood (leaving any brings rot back). Then a graft in the original species where possible, and epoxy reinforcement where needed. On planking, watertightness is completed with caulking.

Prevention

Good ventilation, sound varnish/paint and checking points where water pools largely prevent rot.
