Wooden Boat Winterising: The Fine Balance of Damp and Drying

Winterising a wooden boat needs a different care than fibreglass. Wood is a "living" material; it swells with moisture and shrinks as it dries. The secret to winterising is keeping this balance — over-drying can be as harmful as taking on water.

The danger of over-drying

Ashore, in a sunny, windy spot, rapidly drying wood opens the seams and loosens the caulking. At spring launch the boat may leak for a while (until the planks swell again). So shade, ventilation and moisture balance matter for a wooden boat.

Correct winterising

• Ventilation + shade: a cover/position that airs out without baking in direct sun.
• Seam and varnish check: review varnish and seam condition before winter.
• Rot scan: look for early rot in corners where damp is trapped.

Spring return
