Aluminium boats are light and durable but follow different paint rules than fibreglass and wood. The wrong paint system can cause corrosion and serious damage.
The critical issue: copper-free antifouling
Most standard antifouling paints contain copper. In contact with aluminium, copper triggers galvanic corrosion. So aluminium boats must use copper-free antifouling.
The right primer system
Aluminium needs special primer systems (usually epoxy-based) for adhesion and metal protection. Surface prep and primer are even more decisive on aluminium than on fibreglass.
Surface prep
Correctly cleaning and activating the aluminium surface is essential for durable paint. Neglect surface prep and the paint soon lifts.
It takes expertise
Aluminium painting requires material knowledge; choosing the right product and system is critical. For antifouling types, see our selection guide.
