Carbon fibre, known from aerospace and racing boats, is a material with a very high strength-to-weight ratio. In boat repair too, in certain cases it provides reinforcement superior to standard glass fibre.
When is carbon reinforcement needed?
- High-load areas: points under repeated stress such as the mast step, keel attachment and around deck hardware.
- When weight is critical: on performance boats, when you want to add strength without adding weight.
- Structural repair: where standard structural repair isn't enough and extra stiffness is needed.
The difference from fibreglass
Carbon is far stiffer and lighter than glass fibre; but it's more expensive and correct application (resin ratio, cure conditions) is critical. Not every repair needs carbon — most jobs are perfectly solved with epoxy + glass fibre. Carbon comes in when it's genuinely needed.
Correct diagnosis comes first
Carbon reinforcement isn't a cure-all; where, how much and in which direction to lay the fibres takes engineering. Wrongly applied carbon is both a waste of money and won't give the expected strength.
