Gelcoat or Paint? Renewing a Fibreglass Boat's Exterior

When a fibreglass exterior wears out there are two routes: renew the existing gelcoat, or apply a professional paint system over it. Both have their place; the choice depends on your boat's condition and your expectations.

Gelcoat

Gelcoat is the boat's original surface. Pros: thick, wear-resistant, easy to repair (spot touch-ups possible). Limit: it dulls with age and colour options are narrower than paint. If the surface is still sound, a gelcoat renewal/polish is often the most economical route.

Paint (2K polyurethane)

Modern two-part paint systems offer deep gloss and a wide colour range. Pros: smooth, high gloss, colour change possible. Limit: correct primer and surface prep are essential; repair takes more expertise than gelcoat.

How to decide?

If the gelcoat has thinned but is sound and you don't want a colour change, renew the gelcoat; if you want a full refresh, a colour change or a superyacht-grade finish, paint makes sense. We decide together at the survey by checking surface thickness.
