Osmosis Prevention: Stopping the Problem Before It Starts

Can osmosis be prevented before treatment? A protective approach with barrier coat, hull care and moisture control.

Treating osmosis is a costly, lengthy job. The good news: with the right preventive care the risk can be greatly reduced. The best osmosis treatment is never starting at all.

Protective barrier coat

On new or sound boats, an epoxy barrier coat applied below the waterline makes it harder for water to seep into the laminate. It's the most effective long-term protection and worth considering when buying a new boat.

Keeping the hull dry

A boat kept constantly afloat for long periods is at higher risk. Hauling out at season's end and letting the hull dry lowers moisture. Storing ashore is an advantage here.

Regular checks

Scanning for osmosis signs and moisture ashore each season catches the problem early. Early action is far cheaper than a full treatment.

Antifouling and surface integrity

Sound antifouling and a scratch-free gelcoat close water's entry paths. Repairing surface damage before it grows is part of prevention.
