Preventing Mould and Damp Aboard: A Healthy Interior

Damp and mould are among the most common complaints aboard. Bad smell, stained cushions and an unhealthy cabin… The good news: with the right measures it's largely preventable.

Why does damp build up?

Closed cabin + temperature difference + limited airflow = condensation. Especially on boats closed up over winter, moisture collects on surfaces and mould starts.

Ways to prevent it

• Ventilation: airflow is the most effective solution; vents and airing the cabin on sunny days.
• Desiccant: moisture absorbers and good winterising keep damp under control.
• Materials: quick-dry foam and mould-resistant marine fabrics reduce the problem from the start.

If mould has started

Surface mould can be cleaned; but if it's soaked into cushions and upholstery, renewal may be needed. Without solving the source (damp), mould returns.
