Teak Thickness: When to Renew and When Care Is Enough?

On a teak deck the most critical question is often: is the teak still thick enough? Thickness determines whether just renewing the seams will do, or a full deck is needed.

Why does thickness matter?

Teak thins over time with cleaning, sanding and natural wear. If screw heads are nearing the surface or seam grooves have shallowed, the teak is near the end of its life. Too-thin teak won't hold seams and lets water seep beneath.

How to tell?

• Noticeably reduced seam depth.
• Screw bungs starting to show.
• The adhesive/sub-surface showing through in places.

The decision

If the teak is thick enough, seam renewal is economical and enough. If thinned, a full deck is needed; at that point it's sensible to weigh natural vs synthetic teak. For price factors, see our teak cost article.
