Paint or varnish?
On gulets, part of the hull is painted and exposed wood details are varnished. Varnish shows the natural grain but needs more care; paint is more protective. The decision follows the wood's condition (see wooden boat painting).
Surface prep
On a large surface, surface prep is decisive; correctly stripping old layers and a sound base are essential. Below the waterline, antifouling is renewed.
