Removing Gelcoat Scratches and Yellowing: Restoring Gloss

Gelcoat scratches, yellows and stains at the waterline over time. In most cases the gloss can be largely restored with the right process, without repainting the boat.

Which problem, which solution?

• Surface scratch / dull oxidation: cut & polish with compound and machine exposes the sound gloss beneath.
• Yellowing: ageing white gelcoat drifts to cream; polishing usually recovers it, advanced cases need a spot renewal.
• Waterline stains: removed with a suitable cleaner and polish; stubborn ones need surface work.
• Deep scratches: scratches into the gelcoat are repaired with fill + polish.

Protection

A protective wax after polishing extends the gloss and delays new oxidation. Regular care postpones a full renewal for years (see fibreglass care).

When isn't it enough?

If the gelcoat has thinned too far or is flaking over a wide area, polishing won't do; gelcoat renewal or paint comes into play.
